What does Freedom mean to me?

A few days back a ‘friend’ of mine, NJ (he is a writer and very good at it - http://www.nithinjacob.com/ )on FB posted a status which was a line from the song, ‘ Final cut’, by Pink Floyd.

And if I open my heart to you
And show you my weak side
What would you do?”

Isn’t it true that most of us hide our weaknesses? Right from our childhood we are taught and also we learn from experiences growing up; to overcome our fears, our insecurities and shortcomings to name a few. We are told to be strong and not cry like babies. Which is not bad at all. And we learn…to pretend without meaning to be pretentious, to lie without any malicious intentions. We learn to wear masks as and when needed. We learn to unlearn and we are just humans.

The secret of happiness is freedom. The secret of freedom is courage”- Thucydides quotes.

To me freedom means to be courageous. Courage to express myself, unmasked. Courage to accept myself and to be accepted with all my short comings and idiosyncrasies. Courage to accept others as they are without being judgemental (easier said than done).Courage to oppose misuse of my vulnerability, courage to follow the desires of my heart and dreams……courage to be me.

“Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes”- M.Gandhi.

  3. All the best quotes come from song lyrics, don't they? Although those final words by Gandhi were perfect.

  5. It does take courage to liberate oneself from the inhibitions and insecurities that settles into stagnant behaviors that keeps us from moving forward. Good quote from Ghandi and I'll add that if we aren't making mistakes, then we're not doing anything. Nice meeting you, Janu.

  8. We have been taught to hide our weaknesses instead of embracing them and allowing them to make you a better person. This was lovely.
